Paleoclimate »
records are foundation for our understanding of
the climate system, and
ultimate touchstone for regional and global climate models. There have
been many paleoclimate records derived from geochemical compositions of
marine strata, in contrast, terrestrial paleoclimate records are
lacking in both quality and quantity. My research aims to acquire new
terrestrial paleoclimate records, develop new paleoclimate proxies, and
calibrate existing ones. I use
isotope tools » to study
materials
formed in the low-temperature, near surface environments such as
paleosols »
and speleothems ».

Using stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of kaolinite in paleosols to
infer mid-Cretaceous temperatures (Feng and Yapp, 2009)
To improve the
quality of the terrestrial paleoclimate records, my research attempts
to calibrate the
relationship between the proxy data and climate conditions by
analyzing naturally occurred and synthetic materials. Current, I’m
interested establishing the concentration and isotopic relationship
between CO2 in the gibbsite structure and those in the ambient
environment, and in delineating the impact of various climate and
kinetic factors on the stable isotopic fractionations between
speleothems calcite and drip water. |
